REVEAL
S3 Real-time Eyesafe Visualization Evaluation and Analysis Lidar (REVEAL) technology leverages the infrared fiber laser products that have been developed for the telecommunication industry. This enables the construction of compact, reliable, aerosol micropulse lidars that are fully eye safe for easy deployment in urban environments and test sites.
Because of the low-energy-per-pulse/high-repetition-rate nature of these fiber lasers, S3 lidar relies on photon counting detection to build elastic-backscatter-intensity vs distance-bin histograms to map the concentration of aerosol particulates in the atmosphere.
This technology is well suited for effective monitoring of the atmosphere for potentially hazardous aerosol plumes that requires a lidar that produces high signal-to-noise backscatter returns, fine spatial resolution, rapid updates, and eye-safety at all ranges. While this lidar technique is not able to directly measure the absolute concentration of aerosols, it can measure the relative concentration at a high spatial resolution. Ranges of 5 km and up are achievable at nighttime but increased solar backgrounds limit the maximum range to a few kilometers during daytime.
